So shines a good deed in a weary world ~ Willy Wonka
"Vital to the region’s economy and identity, Philly’s regional theaters thought if they could just make it through the pandemic, life would go back to normal. Three years in, audiences haven’t returned, costs are up, and funding is down. The show must go on, but how?"
Dear Readers,
Upon reading the quote above, some might think of The Merchant of Venice, but for me, it invokes memories of my childhood hero, Mr. Wonka. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory marked my introduction to live-action movies with musical numbers, sparking a lifelong love for musicals. Thousands of plays and musicals later, I find myself witnessing a struggle in live theater unlike any other I've seen, even in the aftermath of 9/11 and the Great Recession. In my perspective, the current challenges seem more profound.
I encourage you to read this article from Philadelphia Magazine. For various reasons, including the complexities of SEPTA, I find myself attending fewer shows, and I'm curious if you're experiencing the same and why. This newsletter was born with the purpose of spreading the word about local productions and cultural events that I personally recommend. Over the years, I've contributed my time to various nonprofit boards and have been involved with The Barrymore's since the days of The Greater Philadelphia Theater Alliance.
While financial resources may be limited, even a dollar can make a difference. Speaking of donations, I proudly serve as a board member of Theater Exile, and this year, we're matching your donations. A $10 donation becomes $20! If you've never given before, consider making a donation this year. For more information, click here.
Another initiative close to my heart is Local Good, a nonprofit my friends and I started. We provide short-term assistance, up to $200 a month, to individuals in need. In 2024, our aim is to increase this amount to $500 monthly, but it's not possible without your support. Think about becoming a monthly donor; any amount helps. More info here.
Ultimately, the most impactful way to support the arts in Philadelphia is to attend a show, volunteer as an usher, donate any amount, and most importantly, tell a friend. This newsletter exists to empower me with the ability of Word of Mouth.
Please don't hesitate to reach out via email or connect with me at The Chronicles of a Cultural Connector. Your insights and contributions are invaluable to the vibrant arts and culture scene we cherish.
